Research Basics Training Program
Michigan State University
College of Human Medicine

The Office of Research partnered with the Office of Medical Education, Research and Development (OMERAD), Graduate Medical Education, Inc. (GMEI), and the Institute for Health Care Studies (IHCS) to develop a Research Basics Training Program (RBT) geared toward early investigators including medical students, graduate medical education trainees, faculty, CHM-affiliated clinicians and community practitioners across the state.

The specific objectives of the RBT Program are to:
  • Provide introductory level training on core research skills that recognizes the unique learning needs of each individual and unit
  • Provide support services and resources that complement the research training and promote the successful application of research skills to actual research projects
  • Increase research productivity
How the Research Basics Training Program Works
The RBT Program is geared toward learners who have time constraints due to heavy academic or clinical schedules. It provides local instructors with all of the materials necessary to teach an RBT module including a lesson plan, power point presentation with lecture notes, handouts, course evaluations, tests and keys, background articles, and links to other resources. The RBT modules can be offered in one-hour time slots or grouped together in a “retreat” format. The RBT Program emphasizes adult-learning principles, including interactive exercises, discussion, and real-life case examples.
The Research Basics Training Program Core Modules
The RBT Program has 9 core modules covering basic research methods topics. When taken in sequence, the modules lead the participants through a learning experience that starts with clinicians’ need to understand the basics of the research process all the way through dissemination of findings. The 9 core RBT modules are:
  • Research and Clinical Practice: Significance, Relevance, Practicality, and Quality Improvement
  • Research Basics: Core Steps from Developing a Research Question to Dissemination of Findings
  • Literature Searches and Reviews
  • Developing a Good Research Design and Plan
  • Data Collection, Management and Protection
  • Data Analysis and Overview of Statistical Software
  • Sample Size and Choosing Statistical Tests
  • Introduction to Human Subjects Research
  • Dissemination of Findings
In addition to the core modules, elective modules are added as topics are identified. Elective modules are currently available in survey construction and administration, compliance with federal regulations involving use of research funds, and program evaluation.
