Assistant or Associate Professor

Position Summary:

The Division of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University seeks candidates for two positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with an established research record in Clinical Psychology/Psychiatry with an emphasis on depression as demonstrated by publication record and funding.

The successful candidates will (1) develop an investigator-initiated research program leading to peer-reviewed scholarship and external funding, (2) provide leadership for growing teams of investigators with institutional partners, and (3) work closely with other Michigan State University faculty to develop significant lines of investigation. Successful candidates will collaborate with faculty across multiple disciplines and campuses on research to improve mental health care in the preclinical and clinical settings. While research will be the main focus of these positions, there will also be opportunities for direct patient care, participation in psychologist, medical students and resident education, as well as outreach to statewide community partners.  This position is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, featuring great schools, low cost of living and easy commutes, recently ranked by Forbes magazine as the top city in which to raise a family.

Michigan State University is partnering with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services to expand its work in the Grand Rapids area to focus on developing clinical and preclinical mental health research.  The successful candidates will take leading roles in an active and rapidly growing research community.  Pine Rest is one of the nation’s largest free-standing psychiatric providers, serving more than 38,000 individuals with mental illness, including more than 55,000 inpatient days and 300,000 outpatient visits annually. A goal of the partnership between MSU and Pine Rest is to establish a Depression Center of Excellence, anchoring depression care and research on the west side of the state. Successful candidates will help shape the research agenda for this Depression Center.

Current research in the MSU Division of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine includes several clinical trials at Pine Rest, as well as translational programs at our state-of-the-art facilities for animal behavior and laboratory analyses at the Van Andel Research Institute, both in Grand Rapids. Candidates will have the opportunity to partner with basic scientists and translational researchers as well as clinical faculty in these programs.

Any clinical care associated with these positions will be hosted in the outpatient services division of Pine Rest. Candidates should demonstrate strong skills in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric conditions commonly seen in outpatient settings, with a focus on depressive disorders.  Pine Rest has an APA-accredited psychology internship program, as well as an ACGME and AOA-accredited psychiatry residency training program, and there will be opportunities to provide teaching and supervision in these contexts if desired.

Minimum Qualifications:

A terminal doctoral degree with the appropriate clinical training and a record of research in depression is required.  A record of scholarly publications and experience with peer-reviewed research funding will be a significant review criterion.  A demonstrated ability to provide leadership and collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams is essential. Assistant Professor level positions require postdoctoral training, a K-award or other evidence of preparation for success.  Associate Professor level applicants require a significant record of scholarship and external funding. Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed (or license-eligible) to practice as a psychologist in the State of Michigan.

Background:

The MSU College of Human Medicine is a community-based medical school with six campuses across the State of Michigan including a recently expanded campus in Grand Rapids, MI.  MSU is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate with regard to gender, age, race, sexual preference or religious background.  The current positions have been developed in partnership with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services.
