Description of Award and Funds
The Barbara F. and Douglas K. Mercer Student Research Scholar Award in Geriatrics

Dr. Barbara Mercer was the first woman awarded a four year MD degree by the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and during her time as an undergraduate and graduate student benefited greatly from the generous support of others.  During her 37 year medical career, she practiced and taught Family Medicine and Geriatrics to students and residents throughout Michigan, emphasizing evidence-based medical research.  A donation to MSU by Dr. Mercer and her spouse, Rev. Dr. Douglas K. Mercer, is used for faculty mentored student research in the area of Geriatrics. This award will help support eager and talented young physicians to add to their knowledge base in geriatrics so future generations of aging Americans will be cared for in compassionate, caring and scientifically exceptional ways.
