finding a mentor or collaborator
All of the strategies listed here will be more productive if you first give some thought to your research interests and goals. Ask yourself some of the following questions. Do you want an academic research career or do you hope to incorporate research into your clinical practice? Are you simply trying to build your CV or fulfill a research requirement? Do you want to publish? Do you have particular research interests? Do you have a research question or idea of your own? Are you interested in basic science or clinical research? Do you already have a mentor in mind? How much time do you have to devote to research? What is your level of research experience? What do you hope to get out of a research experience? Do you need a paid experience or can you volunteer time?
CHM Departmental Websites
Click on academic units, then the department you’re interested in, then the department’s direct link which will take you to their website. Click on the link to faculty profiles or to research activity and read through each profile and/or project. Identify projects that are of interest to you. Make a prioritized list. Once you identify several faculty/projects, you can contact them directly. They will want to know that you have a sincere interest in research, particularly their work, and your level of experience, availability, and goals for a research experience. Go through the same process with the other biomedical and related colleges such as COM, CVM, CON, and CSS. Many CHM faculty members have joint appointments or are engaged in collaborative multi-disciplinary research.
Community of Science (COS)
This is an international, membership organization (MSU belongs through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies) that offers a variety of research support features including COS Expertise - a database of researchers at leading universities involved in a wide variety of research. It is searchable by keywords, names, geographic location, and other fields including institution/college so you can look up researchers at MSU. You may need to first create a "workbench" for yourself - see the menu in the left panel. Then look under COS Expertise, identify MSU as institution, and look up individual MSU researchers or use keywords like epidemiology or infectious diseases.
Venture
Sponsored by the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education’s and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Office, this is a database of scholarly activity and undergraduate research opportunities, designed to connect faculty mentors and undergraduate scholars but is useful for graduate students and others as well.
Faculty Expertise Database
Sponsored by the Colleges of Engineering and Natural Science, this includes many CHM faculty.
