CHM Student Research Registration Process

2023-2024 CHM Student Research Process

The Office of Research at CHM offers assistance to students in conducting research, which includes guidance through registration, credentialing, and regulatory steps prior to research, as well as assistance in finding a research mentor.  These services are summarized in the steps listed below.  Please be aware that our process does NOT guarantee a match to a research project in your specific field of interest.   Also, due to a variety of factors, including increased student participation in research, there may be significant delays in matching to a research project.  The best way to ensure matching is to maintain contact with the Office of Research during the matching process.  Please routinely follow up with Mark Trottier in Grand Rapids (trottie1@msu.edu) or Angie Zell in East Lansing (zell@msu.edu) to ensure your matching request is moving forward and addressing all your specific needs.

SDC Student Process for Research at CHM

This checklist briefly summarizes requirements you must complete before receiving research matching assistance by the CHM Office of Research.

  1. Complete Research Matching/Registration form (see link in step 1 below)
  2. Complete Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) and Human Research Protection training, as applicable (see steps 4 and 5 below)
  3. Follow up with Mark Trottier (GR) or Angie Zell (EL) for updates on the mentor search (see step 9 below)

Read below for more details on this process

1. CHM and our partner institutions require that you be approved for research by CHM, which includes academic standing, TB test status and a background check. All CHM students conducting research at MSU or at a partner institution must register with the Office of Research. For ECE and MCE students, please complete the form here for the Early Mentors for Research Pilot Program (EMR-P):  This form will be available in the Fall. Note that this program is for students looking for a quality research project, not for students seeking specific specialty research.   For ECE and MCE students looking for specific specialty research, use the research registration form here: research registration form.

For LCE students, please complete the research registration form on the CHM Research Office website (here).  See step 2 for specific instructions and tips.

2. If you are already matched to a research mentor, please indicate the name, contact information and affiliation of that mentor.  If you do not have a research mentor and would like assistance finding one, please check the box indicating you would like help finding a research  mentor.  The form will then ask for various information on your background and interests. The more information you provide about your skills and interests, the more likely a match will be found. Be as flexible as you can. All fields must be filled in before the Office of Research begins a mentor search. Attach pdf or Word version of CV.

3. If you are seeking assistance in finding a research mentor, please follow up with Mark Trottier in GR (trottie1@msu.edu) or Angie Zell in EL (zell@msu.edu) at regular intervals to get and provide updates.

4. All MSU trainees engaged in research must complete RCR training.  This is a requirement of the MSU Graduate School. Information on the RCR process, topics and tracking systems can be found click here.  For questions, contact Mark Trottier (trottie1@msu.edu).

5. Please complete Human Research Protection training relevant to your research project. For students at the Lansing campus, please complete MSU IRB Human Research Protection training (click here). For students in Grand Rapids, please complete the proper Human Research Protection training as per your research institution's requirements.  This is often via the CITI program (click here) but is formally determined by the institution at which you will be doing research.  This training is required for students conducting research with human subjects.  Please complete the appropriate training prior to starting your research project.

6. The CHM Office of Research works with Student Affairs Office to check students’ academic status, TB test, and background status when completed registration form and CV are received. The Student Affairs Office reviews all requests for research projects. If they have questions or concerns they contact the student.

7. Research Office receives go-ahead from Student Affairs (please allow 1-2 weeks for this approval).  For those seeking assistance with finding a research mentor, the Research Office reviews student’s information and contacts potential research mentors.

8. Research Office asks researcher to review student materials to see whether s/he is interested in contacting student.

9. Please follow up with Mark Trottier in GR (trottie1@msu.edu) or Angie Zell in EL (zell@msu.edu) at regular intervals for updates.

10. Research Office will contact you when they hear back from a mentor.  The Research Office will guide you further on institution-specific training and credentialing, as needed.

IMPORTANT: Matching to a research mentor may take a significant amount of time, often up to 6 months or more.  Please periodically follow up with the Research Office to keep updated on the mentor matching process.
