Youth Internship Research Program

The MSU College of Human Medicine Youth Internship Research Program 

The MSU College of Human Medicine Youth Internship Research Program (CHM-YIRP) covers students under the age of 18 who are planning on working in a laboratory or doing summer research at CHM. 

There are specific rules in place for adult faculty, staff and students who will work with and/or supervise the youth participant.  And there are also specific rules for youth participants in the program.  Finally, there are requirements for the parents/guardians of youth participants.  

For adult Faculty/Staff/Students:

  • Please read the CHM-YIRP handbook for information on rules and requirements.
    • Handbook: CHM-YIRP Handbook
  • All adult faculty/staff/students who have unsupervised access to minors at a youth program must complete annual staff training
  • All adult faculty/staff/students who have unsupervised access to minors at a youth program must follow program conduct rules as outlined in the program handbook.
  • All individuals who have unsupervised access to minors at a youth program must have been subject to a criminal background check (including sex offender registry check) through the Human Resources Department within the last twelve months.
    • To complete a criminal background check, please complete the form on this website: Youth Program Background Check Process and send to cbs@hr.msu.edu  
  • Follow appropriate safety measures approved by the Office of Environmental Health & Safety for specific laboratory and research work
    • EHS Laboratory & Clinical Safety
  • Complete EHS: Minors in Laboratories Guidance Form with the help of parents/guardians

For parents/guardians:

  • Please read the CHM-YIRP handbook for information on rules and requirements.

  • Parents and participants are required to complete several forms before participation.      Forms are available from the research mentor or the youth program director.  The forms are:
    • Parents/guardians are responsible for transporting students to and from the lab.  If participants will be released to a non-parent/guardian during the duration of the program, the parent/guardian release of responsibility form ("Pick-up/Drop-off/Commuter Form") must be utilized
    • Parent Consent Form
    • Media Release Form
    • Medical Treatment Authorization Form
    • EHS: Minors in Laboratories Guidance Form with the help of the Faculty Mentor / Research Scientist Mentor

All forms must be completed prior to engagement of faculty/staff/adult students and youth program participants in the program. 

 

For youth participants

  • All participants must attend the CHM-YIRP Orientation, date and location for TBA.
