Policies & Procedures

Startup Funding

The purpose of startup funding is to assist new faculty members in developing a strong capacity for research and scholarship. This is accomplished by providing funds toward expenses incurred during the new faculty member’s transition to the university, and for the transfer of research and scholarly activities from his or her previous institution. New faculty are expected to use their startup funding to get on track for success as quickly as possible.

At-Risk Proposals

The purpose of this policy is to define at-risk proposals and to outline procedures for submission of at-risk proposals.

The Michigan State University deadline policy is in effect to ensure proposals receive proper review and are submitted to sponsor without error. A proposal submitted to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) less than three (3) business days prior to sponsor deadline will be considered late. A late proposal will become at-risk if the proposal is not ready prior to 8 hours before sponsor deadline. At-risk proposals receive lowered priority in OSP, receive limited review for compliance, and may not be successfully submitted even after endorsement. The Senior Associate Dean for Research must endorse an at-risk proposal before OSP will begin review for submission.

Stewardship of Expendable and Endowed Awards

To ensure the appropriate administration and stewardship of all gift-based expendable awards and endowed funds. This policy is required for the College to be compliant with Michigan State University policies and procedures

The purpose of this oversight is to ensure appropriate and consistent management processes for successful stewardship.
