Description of Mentored Cancer Research Scholarship

https://medicine.chm.msu.edu/research-program/Klomp%20Lab/index.html

Dr. Jennifer E. Klomp is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Her research focuses on understanding how aberrant kinase signaling downstream of oncogenic KRAS contributes to cancer cell development, growth, maintenance, migration, and acquired resistance.

Project Description: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and is characterized by a 95% rate of mutational activation of the KRAS oncogene. We currently are focused on studying serine/threonine kinases ERK1/2 (ERK) in PDAC because of the nearly ubiquitous addiction of PDAC to oncogenic KRAS and the importance of ERK in driving that dependence. The scholarship student’s research project would be focused on understanding how nuclear versus cytoplasmic populations of ERK activity: 1) contribute to resistance of clinically relevant KRAS/RAS inhibitors, and 2) how they drive oncogenic KRAS signaling in PDAC. To do so they will utilize novel ERK biosensors and constructs in human PDAC cell lines.

The Mentored Cancer Research Scholarhsip is funded by the Helen and Verne Beilfuss Endowment.
